Lighthouses

Our first stop on this day was the Old Mackinac Point Light. Bad timing on our part: the lighthouse was undergoing restoration, not only could we not get inside the building, I couldn't get close enough to hug it—at least not with all those construction workers around.

Here is a view of the front, showing the light tower.

From here, the unique architecture gives the impression of a castle.

Since I couldn't hug the lighthouse, Lynn was kind enough to get a shot of me in front of the light.

Once the Mackinac Bridge was finished, mariners used the bridge lights for navigation, the obsolete light was taken out of service in 1957.

Update: May 2009

I had a chance to revisit this lighthouse following the McGulpin Point Lighthouse relighting ceremony. Had to take advantage of the chance to get some pictures with the repaired roof.

Looks to me like the repairs went quite well, indeed.

Cheboygan River Front Range Lighthouse

Leaving Mackinac behind us, we motored down the very scenic US 23 to Cheboygan to hunt down a couple lights there. The first one, the Cheboygan River Range Front Light, almost escaped us but we spotted the boarded up light tower and swung into an adjoining parking lot to snap a few pictures

The light is not open to public, though still used by the government (wonder who gets the tower office?), so I thought better of a hug attempt.

We then went on to visit the Cheboygan Crib Light. Rescued from falling into the water, the light has been set up in a safer place on land in a public park. It's a cute little nubbin of a light, only 25 feet tall.

The light originally had a fourth order Fresnel lens, blinking red.

Bill and I went out to the marker light at the end of the breakwater pier. We soon tired of the wind and came back, Lois met us halfway.

Lucky for us, Lynn brought her telephoto attachment along and we were able to get a shot of the Fourteen Foot Shoal Light, way off in the distance.
