Our Lighthouse tour ended with three more lights along the Lake Huron shore: the Forty Mile light, the New Presque Isle light and the Alpena light. |
||
The lighthouses were closed for the season, but the grounds were accessible for picture taking. We found a fair sized crowd at the Forty Mile light. The house was divided in two internally on each side of the tower to house the keeper and the assistant keeper. |

The fifty-three feet tall square brick tower sported a fourth order Fresnel lens. I gave it a quick hug. |
|
Lois doesn't want to hug lighthouses, preferring me for some reason. |

We tooled on down U.S. 23 to the Presque Isle lights. The access to the Old Presque Isle Light was gated closed, so we went on to the very impressive New Light. |
|
Built in 1871, the 113 foot light towers over the trees on an approach to the light and in it's heyday housed a third order Fresnel lens. |

These large lights are really hard to get my arms around! |

Lynn put her telephoto skills back to work and got a close-up of the lantern room. |

The afternoon wore on and we had miles to go, but enough time for a quick stop in Alpena to find it's light. We parked the truck and went a block or so to the riverside, turned to the lake and had a "what th..." moment. I said, "Is that the light?" Lynn replied, "Well, it looks like the picture in the book." OK, so then this is the "Grand finale" to our trip. |
|
We couldn't get any closer to the light so Lynn whipped out the telephoto one more time. |

I want to thank my Honey, and Lynn and Bill for for indulging me and making this week of lighthouse chasing such a fun filled success. Lucky for us they don't move fast. |
