Lighthouses

Now that I'm retired, I figure I should get more opportunities to visit Michigan's lighthouses. Starting with this one, right in my own backyard: the William Livingstone Memorial Light on Belle Isle. In April 2009, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum put on an exhibit called "L is for Lighthouse". After taking in the exhibit, I went over to the memorial for some pictures.

It's a fair walk from the road. Here's a shot I took while taking a breather.

The memorial is surrounded with a wrought iron fence, but the padlock clasp has broken. Apparently it now serves double duty as a dog run.

Here is a close up of the lantern room, showing the modern beacon.

This side faces the water and bears the inscription:

This light house
is erected by the
Lake Carriers Association
and Citizens of Detroit
to honor the memory of
William Livingston
President
Lake Carriers Association
1902 - 1925
And throughout his active life
one of the most prominent
and public citizens of
Detroit.
1844 - 1925

The access door is on the side opposite the inscription.
